NHA Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) Frequently Asked Questions

What is LTI (Learning Tool Interoperability)?  Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) is a common education technology specification or standard for enabling a learning management system (LMS) to link and communicate with external tools/resources.
What’s the difference between LTI and SCORM?  They are different industry standards to integrate learning content.
What does an institution need to do to deploy content via LTI?

You will receive an LTI-based cartridge to import into their LMS. Each course will contain individual links to our materials along with the included resources.

LMS Admins will then use a secret and key to enable LTI capabilities and upload cartridges files into their LMS. This should only take a few minutes for LMS Admins.

What is in our LTI course cartridge?

Our LTI-based cartridge is a collection of NHA content links (Module Materials, Quizzes, Tests and Assessments) which are compiled in a file formatted for importing directly into a school’s LMS.

What will the LTI course content look like?

There is no change to the content. LTI courses content is the exact same content that exists today. The content can just be accessed from the customer’s LMS and from within the NHA Portal.

Does this LTI solution support Candidate Pay?

Only for Exam Certification purchases. For Cert Prep and Specialty Products to integrate, LTI only supports Institution Pay.

Will LTI course settings be different?

Faculty will use their institution’s LMS to create and manage their courses, including creating assignments and managing the course’s roster.

LMS functionality is slightly different in each LMS but in general, Faculty will be able to clone courses, gate activities, customize assignments, and create assignments in their institution’s LMS.

What will NHA Reports look like?

The latest Module or Lesson Quiz scores automatically sync with the customer’s LMS gradebook. All Practice Test or Assessment attempts will appear in the customer’s LMS.**

And all other data can be found in our NHA reports. Faculty and Learners will have direct links to Reports in the Learning Insights Center or the NHA Portal to find the PDF reports they use today.

**CMAA Module Quizzes will not post back to LMS gradebook until the next CMAA version.

Are Certification Exam, Exam Management, and Application Processes accessed via LTI?

No. We have direct links to the Exam Application Page for Learners, but all Exam related tasks for Learners or Faculty will remain in the NHA Portal.

What does the customer need to do to import and use our cartridge content?

In addition to the LTI-based cartridge we provide for import, the customer will be given a URL, Key and Secret. The local LMS administrator must then enable the NHA LTI connection in their platform, which requires the credentials and import the cartridge.

Can a customer use one LTI cartridge to create multiple courses within their LMS environment? Will the student need multiple codes if they are in more than one class?

Yes. LTI course set up shouldn’t happen very frequently. Faculty will be able to clone or duplicate courses using one cartridge. New cartridges are delivered when there are major product releases.

Can users of the LTI cartridge still log into NHA Online directly to access resources there as well?

Yes, they can access NHA Portal as well as an LTI course though all learning activities should take place in the third party LMS. In their NHA Portal, Learners can access their NHA reports, course history, and apply for and manage steps towards certification.  Faculty can access all of their NHA Performance Reports via the NHA Portal.

All certification exam processes must still be accessed through nhanow.com

Are there any grading limitations in my LMS when using the LTI cartridge content?

No. The end user’s LMS gradebook will function as intended within their LMS. Assessment scores will report back to the LMS gradebook and all performance data will continue to populate NHA’s PDF or web-based reports.

Will learners need to go to Cert Portal before accessing courses via LTI?

No. Learners can create a NHA account or sign in using an existing account via LTI integration.

What does course setup in NHA Portal look like?

Faculty will no longer need to create courses or assignments in NHA LMS. All of those tasks are completed in the institution’s LMS.

But once a course has been created via LTI and the first learners are accessing the course, the course will appear in the NHA Portal so that faculty and learners can see their course history and access their reports.

Will learners be required to enter a Course ID?

No. Learners will no longer need a course ID.

My institution has a site license (or an institutional pay model). Can we still deploy LTI cartridges?

Yes. We have taken that into consideration in building our technology. In fact, the solution only supports Institution Pay, not Candidate Pay.

My institution policy is to never provide PII. Can we still deploy LTI cartridges?

Yes. We have taken that into consideration in building our technology.
