Current and upcoming testing requirements to Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam
All CBCS candidates should make note of the testing requirements for their scheduled exam day.
- Between June 1 and September 23, 2024: Candidates are required to bring the 2024 version of the coding manuals listed below.
- HCPCS Level II-2024
- Current Procedural Terminology®- 2024
- ICD-10-CM- 2024
- Note: If the candidate does not have the 2024 edition, they may use the immediately preceding edition. Older editions will not be accepted, and the candidate will not be admitted to the exam. Candidates should make every attempt to use the most current edition recommended; outdated manuals may adversely affect the candidate’s performance on the exam
- On or after September 24, 2024: Candidates will no longer need or be permitted to bring any coding manuals.

We are excited to announce an enhanced user experience will be available on September 25, 2024 for Anatomy & Physiology.
Key Highlights:
This update will provide a more cohesive and user friendly learning experience across the NHA product line. Please note that there are no changes to the content itself; only the format in which the content is presented.
New features include:
- Interactive BioDigital Learning Models – embedded throughout modules to provide an interactive learning resource with an added 3D visual component to reinforce learning.
- Interactive Tour explains how to navigate the product, under the “Help” button
- Annotation Tools such as bookmarking, highlighting, and note taking capabilities
- Progress Completion Bar in the main menu will show how far a learner has progressed through a particular lesson

MyCourses & MyStudyMaterials Page Consolidation - August 9
To provide a more streamlined user experience within the NHA dashboard, on August 9 the MyCourses and MyStudyMaterials pages will be consolidated into a single MyCourses page—allowing learners to access both enrolled courses and individually purchased materials in one place. Learners will be seamlessly moved into the new learning experience overnight on August 8, and will continue to have access to content, scores, completion and performance data.
Medical Terminology enhanced learning experience available August 7

CHANGES TO CBCS EXAM CODING MANUAL REQUIREMENTS COMING FALL 2024
Changes to CBCS Study Guide and Practice Test(s)
Beginning September 24, coding manuals will no longer be required or permitted when taking the CBCS exam. All necessary information needed to answer each application of coding item will be contained within each question.
Exam time limits will not be changing.
On July 23, all current inventory of CBCS exam preparation materials will be updated to reflect the new question format within end-of-module quizzes and practice tests. Once this happens, customers currently using CBCS exam prep materials can expect to see the change in their current product.
Programs not using NHA exam prep materials can familiarize themselves and/or their candidates with the new question format prior to sitting for the exam on or after September 24 by viewing an example image here or within the FAQs linked below.

Updated learning experience available June 26 for MA SkillsBuilder™: Clinical & MA SkillsBuilder™: Clinical Plus
We're excited to announce that as of June 26, an updated learning experience will be available for the MA SkillsBuilderTM: Clinical and MA SkillsBuilderTM: Clinical Plus products!
Here are a few key highlights of the new experience:
- There are no changes to the content itself, only the format in which the content is presented will be updated.
- All modules in MA SkillsBuilderTM: Clinical will be updated to the new learning experience.
- The 13 foundations modules in the MA SkillsBuilderTM: Clinical Plus product are already in this format. The remaining 12 skills modules will be updated to provide a cohesive learning experience between the skills and foundational modules.
- In the new format, you will see new learning features like:
- An Interactive Tour explaining how to navigate the product, under the “Help” button
- Annotation tools such as bookmarking, highlighting, and note taking capabilities are now available
- In the main menu, a topic progress bar will show how far a learner has completed a particular lesson
- Videos presented throughout a module can also be accessed in one place under the Video Library for convenient review
Vitals Engagement & Remediation Analytics for CCMA & CMAA Now Available
The Vitals Engagement engine is now available for NHA’s CCMA and CMAA 3.0 exam preparation materials. With this release, we aim to be able to help instructors better understand how their learners are progressing and increase the likelihood of students passing their certification exams by grouping learners based on remediation needs.

- Upgraded reporting experience: NHA's reporting allows for all materials in a course to have the results and information in one streamlined place.
- Adjustable Learning Experience: Institutions can configure modules, simulations, and assessments around the timing and thresholds that work best for them.
- Manage Your Time Effectively: Our platform now displays the suggested time remaining for all product types, so you can plan your learning accordingly.
- Upgraded Study Dashboard: Learners have a new view of their materials and can now get a birds-eye view of content completed and what to do next.

New Enhancements to PersonAbility™ and PersonAbility™ for Pharmacy Technicians
Here are some highlights of the changes:
- Learners can monitor course progress directly from a new enhanced dashboard experience.
- The existing gating of modules, simulations and assessments is being removed and can be accessed anytime except for the Final Assessment.
- You will still have complete control to activate any gating by assigning activities, but you will need to do that manually.
- To unlock the Final Assessment learners must do the following:
- Complete the Baseline Assessment.
- Access each module once.
- Pass the Essential Skills Assessment with 60% or higher.
- Complete all Simulations.

Available August 10, 2023, the new CCMA study materials will feature changes in both content and function. Content within the latest study materials will differ slightly, as it was developed in alignment with the new CCMA exam test plan.
Additionally, you can also expect several new features to help learners stay engaged and retain new knowledge throughout their learning process, including:
- Interactive practice activities throughout modules to reinforce learning
- EHR simulations in select CCMA modules; activities include patient registration, scheduling, check-in/check-out, electronic referrals/preauthorizations, entering lab orders, medication reconciliation, documenting vital signs, and more!
- Patient experience coach discusses ways to improve patient experience when performing specific skills and the patient’s overall perception of the visit
- Professionalism tips videos provide insight into essential skills specific to Certified Clinical Medical Assistants, including Confidence, Emotional Intelligence, Agility, Work Ethic, Multitasking, Dependability, and others.
- Enhanced digital flashcards allow candidates to mark as ‘study’ or ‘know’ and shuffle the order they are presented
- Annotation tools to create bookmarks, highlight important information and take notes for improved studying
- Audio reader and glossary to aid in studying for auditory learners

New CMAA Certification Exam
After a thorough job task analysis study with industry professionals, the new CMAA exam will be available on September 12, 2023, with minimal impact to exam topics and content areas. We advise that you utilize the latest study materials for any learners sitting for the exam on or after this date. Please also note that anyone who tests and fails the exam 30 days prior to the launch of the new exam will need to retest with the new exam.
Updates have been made to the test plan for the new version of the exam.
